Francie’s Rainbow
Every so often we have an angler who comes on one of our trips with a very specific fishing goal. For Francie, that goal was to catch a trophy Rainbow Trout on a mouse pattern. After hours of perseverance her goal became a reality when a fish over two-feet sipped her fly from near a root wad. After a hard battle, the fish was delivered to her hand. What goal do you have that Alaska’s Wild River Guides can help you accomplish?

Flying off the River
It’s tough to leave the river after a great week floating but the flight itself is a magical experience. On some of our rivers, our pilots need to use the whole river and make a “step turn” to get speed to take off. We watch Mike at Tickchik Airventures master this maneuver here. Float plane travel can be one of the best ways to see Alaska!
Coho on a Gurgler
You never know whats going to eat your fly in Alaska. Head guide, Brian Malchoff was fishing for Char with a Gurgler pattern after breakfast. A big chrome fish blew up on his fly and he realized it wasn’t a Char but a nice bright Coho. Although he was under gunned with a six-weight, he had the fish subdued in a matter of minutes. Check out the end of this fun fight!
The best way to fillet a Sockeye Salmon
Watch Wild River Guide and pro filleter, Aubrey Romo turn a bright July Sockeye into a beautiful slab of delicious meat. This seasoned Alaska resident shares her gift for pulling the meat out of a salmon without wasting any of the fish. Enjoy!

“Magnetic North” featuring Wild River Guides
The Fly Out team got the opportunity to float 8 days with guide ambassador Mark Rutherford’s Wild River Guides down River X in SW Alaska – Bristol Bay area. The theme of the trip was variety; variety of weather, fish species, and landscapes. Welcome to Alaska right! We got the authentic Bristol Bay snot and we got the elusive blue bird skies. We floated through the dolly varden factories, silver mines, and root ball rainbow country. Along the way, we rediscoverd the magic of Alaska’s wilderness – a truly wild country. This was a special adventure, and I take off my hat to Mark and crew for a wonderful trip.
